It’s Monday — it’s the start of a new week, the start of a new year (according to the girls), or at least the start of a new season. Yes, we are now in fall. Please don’t argue me on this. The temperatures can still be high and you can keep wearing whatever the f*ck you want but September is FALL. Someone said they could feel this was going to be a good week and you know what? I agree. Let’s make it one. Kum ba yah, and all that.
Discussing favourite seasons is about as interesting as hearing someone tell you about their dream, but I’ll say it nonetheless. I freaking love fall. Autumn. The start of the new school year. Gilmore Girls vibes. Virgo season. All of it. I’m not one of those Halloween/pumpkin spice girlies though — I want a crisp sunny morning in a shorts + trench outfit. That’s the kind of fall I’m talking about when I say I love fall.
I’m not going to harp on the fact that I was in LA (read about the “why” here) but I inevitably came back to Sthlm with a few new *things*. Should I do a post about shopping LA? I (naturally) went to Glossier and knew I wanted to pick up their concealer after hearing
rave about it for the longest time. She wasn’t exaggerating. I already like it better than both my Laura Mercier concealer and the Westman Atelier complexion drops. Still really like both of those, but LOVE the Glossier Stretch Concealer.I also got myself two Cloud Paints, one in Dusk and one in Soar. I’ve had them before and honestly, did they change the formula? I feel like this time around they’re gliding on perfectly and creating a velvety smooth surface. I’m currently obsessed with the Dusk to contour/bronze ever so slightly, but I know that I like a freshly blushed pink cheek in the winter when I’m paler so Soar will come in handy in November-March.
YOU GUYS! The ever so lovely
and took me shopping in LA, and it was honestly one of the highlights of my week. It feels almost surreal that Substack has connected me with so many people from all around the world, who are lovely and thoughtful and smart and funny and insightful. And who would go out of their way to show me a piece of their city. I can’t tell you how much it meant to me to be invited, and I hope they had a good time too (despite jet lag putting me in 25% zombie mode).
After having gone through a few more “serious” books this summer (The Vegetarian, All Fours, Julia, Breasts and Eggs) I was almost relieved when my mum gave me a Marian Keyes book. My favourite mistake is about 48 year old Anna, who leaves her fancy job in beauty PR in NY to move back to her family in Dublin. Soon she gets caught up in a different type of PR debacle concerning a high-end retreat facility.
I’m about half way through because I’m struggling to keep my eyes open at night (shoutout to Kourtney and Lemme Sleep), but it’s been a nice pause from having to think too much about the story I’m reading. I just open up the page I’m on and gently float along in the family drama and the long-lost lover and the locals looking down their noses at a fancy New Yorker. So if you too want a book that lets you float, rather than swim, I’d say you could give it a go.
On a different note, I recently was gifted The Call of the Wild by Jack London. Oh my goodness. It’s a book that grabs you by the collar and shakes you about from the very first page. I’ve currently gotten through about three chapters as I’m deliberate about at which times I pick it up. Call me dramatic but it’s like I need to process each chapter separately after reading it. Have you read it? And what did you think? No spoilers!
I ran my very first 10k this weekend! Quite proud of myself, seeing as I almost talked myself out of it. My knee has been hurting, I hadn’t slept well, I was feeling low. But I went. I showed up and did the damn thing. And it felt good.
Now that I did that, and my knee obviously needs some time to recover, I thought maybe I’d give pilates a go again? I’m not the best at at-home-workouts, but I also don’t want to spend $50 on a gym membership (seeing as I need to save up for my next trip to LA lol).
recommended Izzy Samuel’s 25 day pilates x strength challenge so might give that a go (read the full post here). Any other recommendations?I’m sure we’ve all seen *the* Zoë & Harry pic by now, and my strongest takeaway was the exact same as
’s - it’s a great colour story more than anything. Okay so maybe that’s not exactly what Kelly said but it’s what I heard. And now I can’t stop thinking about these COS suede sneakers, but do I get the navy or the dark brown? I’m leaning navy. Here’s a reminder no one asked for: You don’t have to buy the latest in-style animal print. You can just wear the one you already have, be it zebra, cow or leopard. Seriously — don’t go buying a dozen more animal print things because soon we’ll all be over it for another couple of years and you’ll wonder why your accessory closet resembles the cast of Zootopia. (However, if you love it and you can afford it, I’m not here to judge).
I feel like I’m on a sort of high from life happening all at once, and it’s making me dazed and confused and tired and ALIVE. I hope this new season brings you some of this excited energy too, because lord knows we’ll need it come January. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Let’s keep arguing over whether it’s bikini or boot season.
Love you all,
Jules
