I'm being influenced by a Kardashian and I don't know how I feel about it

O Kendall, wherefore art though such a fashionable Kardashian?

I’m obsessed with Kendall Jenner’s style and I don’t know how I feel about it. Partly because even though I don’t have anything against the Kardashian family, it just seems a little on the nose to have any of them as a role model of any kind. And partly because I’m not sure her outfits can even be considered a style. They’re so simple it’s almost laughable. How can a pair of jeans paired with a tank top be “style inspiration”? I guess it’s the The Row-effect.

Let’s examine the evidence:

In 2 out of 3 outfits, it’s literally jeans and a tank top. Sometimes paired with loafers, other times with sneakers or ballerinas. A blazer or a leather jacket. But still, straight-legged jeans with a light-coloured tank top. And it looks so good.

Is it because of her frame? Her long legs and casually middle-parted shiny hair?Honestly, maybe. But I keep trying to figure out if there is anyone this outfit formula wouldn’t look good on and I’m coming up short. It may not be everyone’s style but that’s a different story. These outfits could and would look incredible on tall, short, slim and curvy bodies all the same. It’s like anti-inspiration. Stripped back and accessible. Am I being delusional?

Now I know that the clothes on her body are more than likely to be worth thousands of dollars as we’re all aware of Kendall’s salary, contacts and penchant for The Row. The cut and fit are probably tailored to her physique, right? Styled by someone paid to put together these exact pieces, knowing there will paparazzi by the handful waiting behind every street corner. But I too have a really well-fitting pair of blue jeans, a black belt and a white tank top - none of which are designed by an Olsen sister but nonetheless hold up great and make me feel put together.

So why do I rarely make these choices myself when getting dressed? Why do I keep looking for that special accessory to bring some unexpected flair to my “boring” outfits? Why do I look to man-repelleresque styling choices, or leopard and sequins and pearls and accent colours? Am I evolving past my former search of ways to stick out like a fashionable sore thumb or am I simply influenced by the current trend of expensive/unattainable minimalism?

Is anyone else dealing with these opposing forces of fashion?
