if im honest, i am not a supermodel, a size zero or a particularly striking beauty so often the simple outfit from inspo pics doesnt quite land irl on myself

This is what I mean! Am I being brainwashed? I haven't really tried out these outfit formulas for myself enough to really evaluate if I feel fabulous or like I'm melting into the wall behind me

I think it’s context as well; in these photos of Kendall she’s the main subject of the shot and because it’s her we know these looks are meant to be viewed as ‘a fashion model wearing a cool outfit’, however if the same outfit was worn by an average woman on the train with her grocery shopping they just become ‘clothes’ tbh ?!

I get what you’re saying! But at the same time I feel myself gravitating more towards wearing ”just clothes” although I still have expectations like great fit, chic and comfortable materials, colours that feel simple yet curated, etc.

I’m curious about what it is you feel you’re missing when you put on these inspo pic outifts, because maybe it’s a key to what I often feel I’m missing too?

It is certainly possible to get your formula, your uniform with basic clothes but the trick is to start with you, not like copying/ using her style. Some people would need an add on or a completely different cut of the items or more color.

I don’t find her style inspiring at all nor particularly done, styled. That one with jeans Bottega sneakers, jacket and a sweater on top is actually not good. Had a recent: how to make it work better, on my insta stories @m_editsforyou

It also is that she is who she is and can wear anything.

Will txt you Julia x

Isn’t it so interesting what makes us feel inspired? I don’t love the sneakers either but the knit draped over the blazer makes me want a blazer even though I’ve never worn one before (and have draped a knit over my shoulder a hundres times by now)🙈

Yes, me too with curating elevated and well fitting staples, 100%! I think as I’m 5”4 and curvy, clothes don’t hang on my body in a way that reads as ‘fashion’ so I think I’m hankering after another point of interest (often an it bag or an interesting pair of sunglasses or maybe a personality piece like a fringed suede jacket or a fur trimmed coat) to show that I’m tapping into that world?

Mm that makes a lot of sense… I think I also like to include something in my outfit that reads more fashion. Although I think clothes can definitely hang on a body in a fashionable way no matter the body (but maybe I’m being naive?)

Such a well timed post. Last weekend, so jet lagged, I went to cheer on some riding buddies at a horse show. Running late & knowing I’d be around animals/dirt all day: donned the old 501’s, white T (old very worn white one from days when the men’s Prada 3 pack was not .. gulp..

$1k for undershirts)

Light barn jacket, mocassins (also fancy ones .. LPia…)

Bucket hat for Sun coverage

Never have I ever gotten so so many compliments on a “no fashion” look..

so, yea, I think it’s a strong formula & you’re not delusional.

I was super comfortable all day..

Aldo feel you on the kendall ambivalence.. 😂😂

I can just imagine how chic you were in your non-fashion fashion outfit, sounds like the perfect mix between classic well-fitting yet pragmatic pieces

It's deceptively difficult to get "simple" outfits to work this well. She's got one of the best stylists in the biz, Dani Michelle, who also styles Hailey Bieber. All that effortlessness takes a lot of calculated effort. And it WORKS! The 'fits are phenomenal.

You’re right! It’s often the simplest things that feel most curated somehow, huh

I feel like -even though we know better- it's still so ingrained in our minds that to look best in your clothes you have to be a certain size/height/weight.

Of course I can only speak for myself but it can be hard to let go off this ideal image of the "perfect" body you've been taught to want so even if you know that an outfit looks good on you, you still think it automatically looks better on someone thinner/taller/more model-esque.

I don't want to imply that I actually think everyone has to look like a 90s supermodel, bodies are great and beautiful in whichever way they come!!

For me, especially since gaining a little weight when my metabolism changed after I turned 30 a few years ago, I notice that outfits that I thought looked great on me before now elicit only a "meh" and I can't seem to shake it off.

Wow, this got way longer than I originally intended, sorry for rambling on and on.

Don’t apologize, you make some really valid points! It’s hard to see past the ideal when the ideal is still being portrayed alongside a message of ”all sizes are beautiful”. My body is also changing every year and I notice myself feeling more comfortable in larger sizes now compared to the past 10 (?) years, which has brought up a lot of different thoughts and feelings. But it’s not just about the size of my body as my aesthetic is also different now - I don’t want to squeeze into a pair of skinny jeans, I’d rather wear looser fits.

Oh I definitely agree with you, most of the time I feel better in my body in general now even though I wonder if that just comes with getting older or if I should send my therapist some flowers lol

And you're also right about the changing aesthetics and the fact that unfortunately a lot of these body positivity/neutrality messages seem to be pure marketing.

Got a little distracted from your original post here ;)

I have come to realize that even “simple” outfits take effort. So I started thinking nothing is effortless and it makes getting dress a little easier when things don’t look how I envisioned. Also, accessories make a huge difference! Last year I saw a video of a girl with the same shirt and jeans who changed her shoes, accessories, coats, etc and they all look like different outfits.

So true, accessories are key but also coming to terms with the fact that we’ll never look exactly like someone else - and that isn’t the point!

There is a lady at my office who I wears the most basic outfits but I just know she knows exactly what she is doing because everything fits her perfectly. I've never seen someone pull of jeans and a tee IRL so well. This is what motivates me to keep trying haha

Yes! The aspiration is to have only well-fitting clothes in the closet and knowing how to style them impeccably

I love this conversation. The first thing I notice is that the accessorizing with each outfit makes it feel more thought out and put together. So even though there is a “this old thing” feel to the clothes, the accessories elevate it. Also, totally agree that the fit of the clothes is key. I’ll never forget when Tom Ford said he has his fruit-of-the-loom t-shirts tailored to hit the right place on his tricep.

Also a really great point, accesories definitely pull these fits towards a more curated/styled end of the spectrum. Need to get my tshirts tricep-tailored asap!

I wonder if the answer has to do with the impeccable tailoring. When I throw on a white tee and jeans, it doesn't look nearly as good. Not because I'm 5’1, but because my jeans run a little looser—and not in a chic way! Simply because it feels impossible to find jeans that suit a short frame from the get-go. I’m taking this as a reminder to finally take my pile of clothes to the tailor! 🫣🙃

Expand full comment
Julia Norberg's avatar

Might be! I keep reminding myself that the tees and tanks I buy from H&M and Zara never hold up well so I might as well go for the brands that are a little pricier - better fabrics and cuts!

Expand full comment
Cora's avatar

I think on one hand it's the simplicity of the outfits, the "oh this old thing, I just threw on the first thing I found" vibe, a certain nonchalance (can't believe I'm using this word in relation to a Kardashian) and on the other hand it's her figure that's working well with the straight leg jeans etc., creating a look a lot of us still more or less aspire to. At least I know that I do in my weaker moments, being at least 15 cm shorter and several Kilos heavier than Kendall haha.

It’s true, the nochalance goes a long way! I’m curious to uncover more about how much credit can be given to cm and kgs though, as I feel many of us still look great in a straighter denim with a well-fitting cotton top?

This is my every day uniform and I definitely don’t look as put together as Miss Kendall. I think you hit the nail on the head with the fact these pieces will be tailored to her, which in my opinion is the pillar of looking good. And of course, the long legs definitely helps.
